Vehicle: Mercedes Sprinter 910 FWD
Fault: Mot failure, garage unable to adjust handbrake any further.
Repair: This is one of those jobs where you have to understand how the handbrake system works. In order to get the required readings for the mot the garage had adjusted the handbrake shoes first inside the rear discs and we can see from picture one they had over adjusted the handbrake cable also. This would give you very low lifting handbrake in the cab and the feeling you had a good handbrake. Until you actually used it on a hill...!
The issue here was that the handbrake shoes had infact lost their linings and instead of replacing them, repairers had continued to adhust them until it was metal on metal inside the rear disc drums.
We released the handbrake cable completely, this allowed the shoes to contract and allowed the discs to be removed. We replaced the whole handbrake system on the axle. (Shoes, springs, adjuster, cable lever and pin and steady posts)
Once the discs were replaced and callipers installed we adjust the handbrake shoes to the disc drum first and then the handbrake cable to give us 3-4 clicks in the cab and no binding whilst the handbrake was released. This is the corrct way to adjust the handbrake system. Mot passed.
